Hope For Struggling Chiropractors

Don’t Give Up!

A lot of chiropractors are hurting today.  A lot of chiropractors are just getting by.  A lot of chiropractors are nearly bankrupt.  A lot of chiropractors are disillusioned and ready to give up.  If you are struggling DON’T GIVE UP!

You may have made a lot of mistakes in the past.  You may not live in the biggest town.  You may not be the best adjuster in the world.  The good news is that success doesn’t depend on any of that.  Success depends on your willingness to change and to grow into a different person, a more successful person.


I have been on the brink of bankruptcy, while my wife was expecting our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th children.  Yes, that’s triplets.  We were expecting triplets and making no money, but we survived.  Now we have a great life and a very successful practice.  I didn’t intentionally follow this formula until recently, but looking back on the last few years this is how I have come back from the brink.  Here’s how I did it and you can too.  If I can do it, anybody can.

Commit to Personal Growth

If you want different results you need to do something different.  You need to grow in how you understand chiropractic.  You need to grow in your effectiveness as a communicator.  There is a well-known saying by Lou Holz, “If you aren’t growing you are dying.”  Your future success depends on you having the discipline to change and grow yourself each and every day.  Start today!

Learn from People More Successful than You

This step is crucial.  You need somebody that has the life and practice you want to help you along the journey.  It can’t be the guy you graduated chiropractic college with who is struggling just as much as you.  You need somebody that is further down the road of success to guide you.  For us, it was a wonderful coach with Integrity Managment for a long time.  When choosing a coach or mentor make sure they are more successful than you are, have integrity, have a heart of a servant, and are still in the game.  DO NOT waste your days on Facebook in groups with other DC’s bashing the profession and more successful DC’s. Thanks to social media it’s easier than ever to cluck around with chickens and make excuses for never growing.  Don’t fall into that trap.


Focus on Other Peoples’ Needs Not Yours

Occasionally I get sick.  I have also struggled with depression most of my adult life.  At times it can be crippling.  The funny thing about being sick, and being depressed is that 90% of the time when I go to the office and start seeing patients, I feel better.  Thinking of others elevates you emotionally, spiritually, and physically.

This may sound like an impossible task when you are struggling to make your lease payments or pay your staff or yourself, but you need to be obsessively focused on the needs of your patients, your staff, and your family.  What I am talking about is humility and the great CS Lewis described humility this way, “Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.”  If you are struggling make this your daily mantra.  It has pulled me through some dark valleys in life.

Be Ready for More Failure

You may already feel like a failure right now so you may not want to hear this, but rest assured you will continue to have failure in your life.  Not everything you do will work the first time.  I sucked and Facebook marketing until I learned and perfected the right techniques.  Remember done is better than perfect, especially since nothing is ever perfect.  Part of the reason DC’s struggle is because we give up on techniques and systems too soon.  Stick with things, expect to fail, and learn from that failure and make things better.


John Maxwell defines success as:  Knowing your purpose in life, growing to reach your maximum potential, and adding value to others.  I love this definition.  Success is an ever-changing destination.  It’s a journey we all get to live.  Some of us are just farther along than others.

Please don’t give up.  There is hope for a brighter future for you and my beloved profession.  Your family, your current patients, and future patients are counting on you.  Now get busy becoming successful.
